I rate this one five stars. Having read several of Fletcher's novels to date I consider myself a bit of a connoisseur of the Fletcher style and consider this one of his better mysteries. What is the Fletcher style then? To me it starts with a fast pace and moves forward at near break neck speed. There is just enough detail to keep you informed, no more information than is needed, lots of twists and turns, and, of course, the surprise ending. Fletcher has the knack for developing plots as the story unfolds, adding layers onto the mystery with lots of plot twists and red herrings, all wrapped up in solid character development and supported by a wonderful gift for the English language. I consider J. S. Fletcher to be one of the best of the now lesser known mystery novel writers of the early 20th century. From my experience Fletcher never fails to satisfy my hunger for a good read. Written in beautifully "period" English, this mystery has many threads to solve. The main characters work wonderfully with each other to solve the mystery, with the assistance of the British police. Takes place prior to 1924, in London, and kept my interest until the end. I love the commonsense of the Yorkshire men!
Fletcher usually provides less coincidence and more convincing plots. But this was fast-paced and twisty, and the number of professional and amateur detectives, all rushing around and keeping information back from each other while the murders pile up, adds a fair amount of comic relief.
What a brilliant author. How did he continue to come up with these stories.
Suspense is good. Fast paced. Keeps you riveted. Almost every person in the book wants to do ‘sleuthing’ thanks to the hefty reward announced by the protagonist. Only complaint is against the proof-reader. Many a times, sentences are cut in between creating them into separate paragraphs, making it irritating to read. Eg., at location 454-
“I’m not--for the moment--supposing that
she is a thief,” answered
Fullway. “Why I want-and must-find her at
once is to ask her a
simple question. What was she doing in James
Allerdyke’s room?
For-I’ve an idea.”
The golden age of detectives was born on such context. On the other hand, I was not fully engrossed by The Amalgamation, which seemed heavy in taking off the ground. It might have to do with J. S. Fletcher being in the earlier Golden Age cadre, as with Freeman Wills Crofts, who wrote meticulous plots that proceeded on the basis of factual evidence, with a twist or turn at the end. Depending on the reader's mood or desires at the moment, I venture to guess that Fletcher and his peers would be amenable, and contain a certain amount of suspense in a well-dressed package.
